SOLIDARITY IS THE ONLY ENEMY OF MISERY
2019, Video Installation on three canvas (9:00 min)
By displaying the large-scale video installation Solidarity Is The Only Enemy Of Misery KÖNIG Gallery Tokyo is pleased to show the latest film work by acte tm. While using a multilayered cinematic language, the film lays its focus on the interplay of identity and representation.
In its critique, Solidarity Is The Only Enemy Of Misery is an homage to the variety of stories and subjectivities of the LGBTQ community covering topics such as representation and solidarity. Without trying to impose a“correct” way of interpretation, the film fundamentally questions systems that at are based on binary positions and restrictive categorizations.
Parallel to each other yet physically separated, the work is shown on three individual screens, all of which use their own visual vocabulary, thereby engaging in a dialogue at the intersection of ethnicity, gender and popular culture. By doing so, the film allows an insight into one of the founding houses of the Ballroom scene – the iconic house of Saint Laurent based in New York City.
The interviews and the Voguing dance performances that make up the film reflect and epitomize a complex conflict between daily life and the dream world, led in order to negotiate the dialectic nature of liberty and entrapment. Unambiguously, the film emphasizes that as a subjective document it is unable to ever actually constitute an objective record of its subject matter which is why act e™ refrain from attributing the film to the documentary genre.
